Summit Surgeons Voted ‘Best Doctors for Women’ in 2011

October 1, 2011 – Summit Orthopedics’ surgeons, James Gannon, M.D. and Peter Daly, M.D., were voted by their peers as the Twin Cities’ ‘Best Doctors for Women’ in the October 2011 issue of Minnesota Monthly. Dr. Gannon has consistently been recognized among his peers as one of the Twin Cities’ ‘Best Doctors for Women.’ Congratulations to both.

Amy Stromwall, MD attends the Pan American Games with women’s USA swim team

October 2011 – Amy Stromwall, M.D. traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico as a physician with Team USA women’s swim team in October.  “The Pan Am Games were crazy,” said Dr. Stromwall. ”We sent 47 swimmers, 12 staff and won 44 medals!  It was a great seven days of swimming.” Dr. Stromwall specializes in non-operative sports medicine at Summit Orthopedics and has worked as a women’s swim team physician for Team USA over the last several years.

The Pan American Games are held every four years, in the year before the summer Olympic Games and are the second-largest multi-sport event behind only the summer Olympics. Dr. Stromwall is awaiting her next assignment.

Summit Spinecare receives NCQA recognition

November 1, 2011 – Summit Orthopedics’ Spinecare program was recognized today by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for its high quality physicians who take a patient-centered approach to back pain using evidence-based guidelines.

Recognition is only awarded to spine centers that follow evidence-based criteria: thorough patient assessment; recommendations for appropriate physical activity; avoiding unnecessary imaging; patient education and shared decision making with the patient about surgery and alternatives to surgery; tracking and analyzing surgical outcomes; and surveying patients about their experience.

The trend in caring for back pain is to explore non-surgical solutions. Summit Spinecare launched in 2010 and receives back and neck pain cases from across Minnesota and the region. In 2011, Summit Spinecare was one of the first spine centers in the state to report clinical outcomes. Patient outcomes and satisfaction measured high. In fact, 84 percent of patients at Summit Spinecare reported recovery from symptoms without surgery and 93 percent were satisfied with the time the doctor spent with them.

Vijay Eyunni, MD provides greater understanding of Occupational Medicine

October 21, 2011 – In an interview with the publishers of Employee Benefits and Minnesota Physician magazines, Vijay Eyunni, MD of Minnesota Occupational Health explained that ocupational medicine provides high quality medical care and injury prevention for employees and employers.

Occupational medicine physicians perform drug testing, regulatory exams for employees working with chemicals, asbestos and noise, as well as ergonomic evaluations to train employees proper lifting and bending techniques to reduce the rate of injuries. According to Dr. Eyunni, there has been a 40 percent drop in work-related injuries in the past 10 to 15 years.

Dr. Eyunni is currently a team physician with the Minnesota Twins and the professional lacrosse team, the Minnesota Swarm.

Angela Voight, M.D., new non-operative sports medicine specialist at Summit Orthopedics

October 1, 2011 – Angela Voight, M.D. joins Summit Orthopedics as a non-operative sports medicine physician with a genuine passion for athletes of all ages and skill level. As an endurance athlete herself, Dr. Voight has a lot of knowledge about specific types of endurance injuries, how to approach them and the best way to get patients back to their sport.

Dr. Voight enjoys all sports and is currently the official orthopedic physician for the Minnesota Vixen, an all female tackle football team. Formerly, she was a wide-receiver for the Vixen. More to come from Dr. Voight.
