Dr. Peter Daly, sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon at Summit Orthopedics, was interviewed as part of the September 2013 edition of the Mpls./St. Paul Magazine’s article “Our Orthopedic Scene: The people making Minnesota a leader in orthopedic care.”  Here are some excerpts from the article:

Laying the Groundwork

“Dr. Peter Daly of Summit Orthopedics felt orthopedics was the right fit for him because he had always enjoyed working with his hands.  ‘It’s very enjoyable to me to be able to have a large variety within my professional life, which includes seeing patients in my office, using surgical tools and techniques to help them, writing prescriptions, and referring them to therapy,’ he says. ‘I can see patients from pediatric all the way through geriatric, so it’s just a great variety.”

Tremendous Advancements

“[Joint replacements] should be done at the appropriate time in a patient’s life.  While highly successful for many under age 50, joint replacements should outlive their patients, not vice versa. ‘What we need to do as orthopedic surgeons is balance the patient’s expectations with what we can realistically deliver in a safe fashion,’ Daly says.  And, of course, impress upon patients that surgery is only half the treatment – successful orthopedic surgery also hinges on diligent physical therapy.”
