USA TODAY Names The Twin Cities America’s Fittest City
Living in the nation’s fittest city has health advantages. We have tips to help you make the most of them.

The American College of Sports Medicine considered a number of factors before declaring Minneapolis/Saint Paul the healthiest cities in the country. We offer more parks per square mile than any other city in the nation. Our large community of avid cyclists enjoys 53 miles of bike trails surrounding the cities. Urban community groups focused on healthy food and a wealth of farmer’s markets support access to fresh, healthy food. All of these assets support your health in general, and your bone health in particular.
- Twin Cities parks. Everyone living in the Twin Cities is within six blocks of a park, and our park system is focused on giving residents reasons to enjoy park amenities and the health benefits that go with them. Soak up some Vitamin D and indulge in your favorite activity. Between five-mile runs and marathons in warmer weather, loppet ski festivals in our snowy season, and an energizing walk any time, our parks make it easy and convenient for you to get the exercise essential to good bone health.
- A cyclist population. Biking is great exercise; it’s low impact, great for strengthening muscle, and an excellent way to strengthen your heart and lungs. We have trails lined with affordable bikes for rent, and plenty of bike groups to join for company and support. In the Twin Cities, cycling your way to fitness couldn’t be easier. Just grab your helmet and go.
- An abundance of accessible fresh food. Vitamin D and calcium are essential for good bone health, along with phosphorus, magnesium, and Vitamins K, C, and A. Our farmer’s markets are a wonderful source of Minnesota dairy products and fresh leafy greens like kale, turnip greens, bok choy, and broccoli—all excellent dietary sources of calcium.
Fitness is critical to well being, and the Twin Cities is lauded for providing the resources that encourage and support healthy lifestyles. Congratulations to our community for putting these benefits to such good use—keep up the good work.
