Minneapolis Named Among World’s Best Bike Cities
Biking is an excellent way to maintain fitness and good health, and bikers in the Twin Cities couldn’t be better positioned: Minneapolis is ranked among the top 20 best bike cities in the world.

There’s nothing quite as pleasant as skimming along a Twin Cities bike trail on a summer afternoon. In addition to being an enjoyable and eco-friendly mode of transportation, cycling also pays health dividends in long-term fitness. This low-impact exercise increases physical activity and can reduce weight while delivering cardiovascular and mental health benefits. As part of a cross training program, the joint-friendly and complementary muscle-building advantages of biking make this exercise an excellent choice for runners—and anyone focused on improving overall fitness.
When considering international health concerns, the World Health Organization lists obesity and physical inactivity as two of the five leading global risks for mortality—factors estimated to cost national economies billions of dollars. For these reasons, United States cities like New York and Chicago, as well as urban centers around the world, are launching programs to create networks of bicycle infrastructure to encourage their residents to cycle.
In recognition of these efforts, the Copenhagenize Design Company, a Danish design consultancy specializing in developing bicycle-friendly urban landscapes and cycling infrastructure, compiles an annual list of the best cities in the world for bicycling.
This year, 155 metropolitan areas worldwide were vetted for the 20 top spots. We are delighted to tell you that Minneapolis placed among the top 20 as the only U.S. city, and one of only two cities in North American to be chosen. Our network of street bike lanes, bike paths, and our Nice Ride bike share program helped to secure our ranking among the winning cities.
If you love to bike, or want to add biking to your exercise program, we encourage you to take advantage of the fact that you are living in a bike enthusiast’s dream city. The next time you have somewhere to go, think about grabbing your bike helmet instead of your car keys.
