Strength Training Goals Are More Diverse Than You Might Think

As Summit’s strength training program grows, trainers applaud diverse goals of the clients they train.

In the year since Summit launched the health and wellness program at HealthEast Sports Center, demand for individual strength training services is growing faster than anticipated. Summit’s performance specialists expect athletes to come to them with specific strength training goals. But sports performance is only one of the objectives attracting clients to individualized training.

“We really enjoy the diversity of our clients,” says performance specialist Heidi Corbett. “There is no one who can’t benefit from some form of strength training, and our program is designed to address each client’s unique needs. I love creating workouts that move my clients toward their objectives, and celebrating their progress with them.” Heidi talks about some the strength training goals motivating people to seek out her services.

Developing stability and balance to prevent fall-related injuries.

“More people understand the value of exercise as preventative health care,” she explains. “The risk of fall-related injuries increases as we age. I work with several 50-plus clients focusing on improving their core strength, stability, and balance. Building strength now means they’ll be less vulnerable to falls in the future.”

An extension of rehabilitative therapy following surgery.

For some patients, full rehabilitation after a total joint procedure—or any surgery—requires more therapy than insurance covers. Summit’s strength training resources provide a way for patients to continue rehabilitation under the guidance of a sports medicine specialist. Because Summit’s specialists and therapists work together, they can collaborate to address individual patient needs. Patients benefit from a program designed to guide them safely back to a full recovery.

Physician-referred patients need targeted care.

Strength training can be a conservative treatment for joint issues that may help patients to delay or avoid elective surgery. When Summit physicians refer patients for strength training, patients have the reassurance that their training will be guided by their doctor’s recommendations.

Fitness supporting travel dreams.

“I work with individuals and couples in their 40s and 50s who see strength training as a way to maintain their level of activity as they age,” says Heidi. “One couple I work with are in their 50s; they love to travel and explore new cities on foot. For them, staying strong means they’ll be climbing the hills in San Francisco or exploring the cobblestone streets of Prague for decades to come.”

Young athletes and athletic teams.

“Summit provides sports medicine services to District 833 high schools, so of course training athletes is part of what we do,” Heidi laughs. “I was a student athlete myself, so it’s great fun to support these teams.”
