When we look at the different things we use, we now have drugs that are shorter reacting, with better side effect profiles, which are just easier for people to tolerate. So the whole category of drugs we use are vastly improved. Each day that someone comes in for an orthopedic procedure with Summit Orthopedics, know that we can tailor an anesthetic to that individual’s needs. We have pathways that have been very effective, which is very exciting and very optimistic. We also have monitoring capability that allows us to assess for problems when they occur, to diagnose them quicker, and treat them more accurately and aggressively. The other thing that’s really been quite dramatic: we have adopted the use of ultrasound technology to help us when we do a peripheral nerve block, a regional anesthetic technique. With the ultrasound technology, we’re able to identify the nerve structures we want to block. If a person comes in and they have had bad experiences with whatever kinds of anesthesia they’ve had in the past, we can tailor that anesthetic to their needs. Anticipating the postoperative problems that occur, we want to mitigate those as much as we can. That person is the main focus of what we do, so we can make something work for anyone.
