This Summit Orthopedics position is subject to the requirements outlined in the recent Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Final Rule making Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for employees in most health care settings, including those in Ambulatory Surgery Centers. Candidates for employment who will perform work within any of Summit’s Ambulatory Surgery Centers will need to be fully vaccinated, which means at least two weeks post final vaccine, or have been granted an approved medical or religious exemption prior to a start date.

This is a full time position working directly with an arthritis orthopedic surgeon and team. This role involves working closely with the surgeon and second APP to diagnose and treat patients with arthritic conditions; this role will be assisting in surgery as needed. Primary locations will be at our Woodlake Campus, and will also be traveling to clinics in Vadnais Heights a few times a month. Flexibility to float to other locations as needed. Surgeries are performed at Summit Orthopedic Surgery Centers in Vadnais Heights, United Hospital, and Woodwinds Hospital. The role also involves taking call with the surgeon throughout the year. On call and occasional weekends are required for this team. This role has some flexibility with the schedule to best meet the needs of the team and patient care. Scheduled hours are 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Hours are approximate/ estimated based on team or clinic needs.
The Physician Assistant functions as first or second assist in the operating room, including performing surgical exposure, surgical dissections, layer closure of wounds, etc.
Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.
Prepare patient for surgery, including positioning, skin preparation, administration of local anesthetic and equipment preparation.
Conducts physical exams, taking medical history, image interpretation and patient evaluation/care.
Consults with physician as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of work.
Orders diagnostic tests and scans and prescribes medications.
Administer injections, participate in suture and dressing removal and manage simple fracture management/cast application and removal.
Counsels patient/family on preventive health care, including pre- and post- operative education.
Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care.
