Summit Celebrates First Surgery with Mazor X Stealth Edition Robotic Guidance Platform
Roman Guerrero, M.D., one of Summit’s spine surgery experts, discusses the groundbreaking surgery — the first to use the Mazor X Stealth™ Edition Robotic Guidance Platform in an ambulatory surgery center.
On June 8, Summit Orthopedics spine surgeon Roman Guerrero, M.D., successfully performed spine surgery at the Eagan Surgery Center using the Mazor X Stealth Edition Robotic Guidance Platform. Dr. Guerrero became the first surgeon in the Midwest to use the leading-edge robotic-assisted surgical platform at an ambulatory surgery center.
Because they use such small incisions, minimally invasive procedures traditionally give surgeons a limited view of the patient’s anatomy. This can make minimally invasive options more technically complex than open surgeries are. The Mazor X Stealth Edition enables surgeons to see the patient’s anatomy with ease. The technology combines image-based preoperative planning tools and analytics with intraoperative guidance to help surgeons perform minimally invasive spine procedures with greater precision, accuracy, and efficiency.
“Every patient is unique, and every patient deserves the most personalized care available. Summit Orthopedics has always been at the forefront of delivering that personalized care and achieving tremendous patient results, and our integration of the Mazor X Stealth further exemplifies that,” said Dr. Guerrero.
The patient was a 58-year-old man who had struggled with severe back pain for years. He also experienced right-side leg pain. After trying all available nonsurgical options over nine months, the patient and Dr. Guerrero determined that it was time for surgery. Assisted by the Mazor X Stealth, Dr. Guerrero performed a lumbar transforaminal interbody fusion and a posterior decompression.
“It was very exciting to use this new, state-of-the-art robotic technology and to realize the enhanced positive impact we can now have on our spinal surgery patients,” Dr. Guerrero said.
