How Heavy Is Too Heavy? Finding the Right Bag

From school backpacks and laptop bags to purses and crossbody bags, we carry more than we realize. But could your everyday bag be contributing to back, neck, or shoulder pain?

Summit Orthopedics expert Dr. Chris Bejcek recently joined WCCO | CBS News Minnesota to discuss backpack safety and share practical tips for parents and students.

How Heavy Is Too Heavy?

For children, a general guideline is to keep a fully packed backpack at no more than 10% to 15% of their body weight. For example, a child weighing 80 pounds should carry approximately 8 to 12 pounds or less.

For adults, there isn’t one weight limit that works for every bag. How you distribute the weight and how long you carry it can affect your comfort.

Everyday Bag Safety Tips

Whether you’re heading to school, commuting to work, or running errands, these simple tips can help reduce unnecessary strain.

Know When It’s Time to Lighten Your Load

If you frequently lean to one side, adjust your posture, or experience neck, back, or shoulder discomfort while carrying your bag, it may be time to lighten the load.

Small changes to your daily routine can make a difference. Choose a bag that fits your needs, distribute weight evenly when possible, and avoid carrying unnecessary items.
