Meet Kevin Sandhu, M.D.
Born and raised in the Midwest, hip and knee orthopedic surgeon Kevin Sandhu, M.D., was a dedicated hockey player growing up. As he evaluated possible careers, medicine offered the satisfaction and balance he was looking for.
Dr. Kevin Sandhu’s background
He became interested in orthopedics in medical school, “not because of my sports-playing history, but because in orthopedic surgery, you get to physically fix problems and almost instantaneously help people feel and get better,” Dr. Sandhu said. “Arthritis takes so much from people. The opportunity to restore their motion, function, and ability to return to activities they enjoy is something that is important to me.”
After graduating summa cum laude from Michigan State University, he remained a Spartan and obtained his medical degrees from Michigan State College of Human Medicine. He completed his surgical residency in orthopedics at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the University of Florida. Dr. Sandhu’s practice focuses on total hip and total knee replacement and trauma care.
Dr. Kevin Sandhu’s practice philosophy
The cornerstone of Dr. Sandhu’s practice philosophy is that care should be individualized to each patient. “Arthritis is the same, but its effect on patients varies since every individual has different goals and expectations,” he explained. “Identifying what they have lost, and what they’re trying to get back, informs each treatment plan.”
Dr. Sandhu enjoys forming a relationship with his patients and their families. Because he focuses on total joint replacement, the surgical preparation and recovery process can be intense. He gets to know each patient and family to help them achieve their best possible outcome.
“The best compliment I can get is when a patient says I treated them like family … I want patients to feel heard and to feel confident that I am behind them every step of the way.”
More about Dr. Sandhu
When he’s not working, Dr. Sandhu spends his time outdoors with his wife, who is also a surgeon, and his three dogs. He is glad to be back in the Midwest and looks forward to being a part of the Twin Cities community. He also enjoys golf, ice hockey, exercise, traveling, biking, and spending time with his family.
