Foot and Ankle Care

On average, you walk between 4,000 and 5,000 steps a day. Your feet are made to withstand this type of use, but various injuries and conditions can cause pain and disability.

At Summit Orthopedics, our board-certified foot and ankle surgeons and physicians in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area specialize in diagnosing and treating all types of foot and ankle injuries and conditions. We use the most advanced methods to quickly diagnose your pain and get you on the fastest path to recovery.

Conditions We Treat

We can help with a range of foot and ankle conditions, including arthritis, tendonitis and sports injuries, in addition to these common issues:

Bunions

A bunion is a bony bump on the side of your big toe. It happens when the joints and tissue of the big toe shift and point toward the other toes. Bunions develop over time and can eventually become red, swollen and painful.

Hammer Toes

A hammer toe develops when one of your smaller toes bends at the middle joint and looks like a hammer. When the tendons in your toe aren’t working together correctly, they can cause the toe to bend downward. Hammer toes, in addition to corns and calluses on your toes,  can also cause pain and joint dislocation.

Fractures

Fractures occur when your bone breaks, often from sudden trauma like a fall or sports injury. You can also fracture a bone in your foot or ankle due to repetitive stress from activities such as running.

Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma is a condition that develops when the tissue around a nerve leading to your toes thickens. This typically occurs where the nerve passes beneath the ligament connecting your toe bones to your foot.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is swelling of a band of tissue in your foot called the plantar fascia. This tissue runs along the bottom of your foot and supports your arch. Over time, too much stress can cause tiny tears in the plantar fascia tissue, leading to inflammation. If a doctor doesn’t treat this condition promptly, you may have pain and stiffness, especially when you walk.

Sprains

Ankle sprains happen when the ligaments supporting your ankle get stretched too far or torn. Sprains can cause pain, swelling and bruising and make it difficult for you to walk.

Diagnostic Imaging

Diagnostic imaging is often the first step to living with less foot and ankle problems. MRIs, CT scans and X-rays help your doctor reach an accurate diagnosis to provide the most precise treatment.

Orthotics and Prosthetics

Orthotics are devices that help support, align and correct the function of your muscles and bones. A prosthetic is an artificial device that replaces a missing body part, such as your leg or arm. Prosthetics can help you perform daily tasks and improve your quality of life, in addition to serving a cosmetic purpose.

Physical Therapy

Your doctor at Summit Orthopedics may recommend physical therapy to treat your pain or to strengthen your ankle after surgery. Physical therapy combines different exercises that you do under the guidance of a trained expert, either at our facility or at home.

Surgery

If nonsurgical treatments don’t relieve your pain, your doctor might suggest surgery. Our surgeons are skilled in a variety of minimally invasive procedures, including:
