What is cervical dystonia?

Cervical dystonia, also called spasmodic torticollis, is an uncommon neurological condition involving involuntary contractions of the neck muscles and causing abnormal postures and movements of the head. The condition seldom occurs in children and adolescents, and more frequently develops during middle age. The causes of the condition are unknown.

Your physician will review your health history and conduct a thorough physical examination. Your doctor may also order blood tests or diagnostic imaging, such as an MRI, to rule out other conditions.

How is cervical dystonia treated?

There is no known cure for cervical dystonia. However, injections of the botulinum toxin have been shown to reduce symptoms.
