What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that was developed in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates. It focuses on core stabilization, strengthening exercises, as well as flexibility exercises. There is a lot of focus on breathing and correct alignment in order to promote stability.
How does it work?
Pilates can be performed at home on an exercise mat, in a larger group class on a mat, or progress to a gym or studio that has special pilates equipment. Oftentimes, people begin with mat work and can advance to equipment when appropriate
What are the benefits?
Pilates exercises are great because most of them can be performed anywhere with little to no equipment. The exercises are broken down so that people of all abilities can perform them at their own level. Pilates can help retrain and strengthen your core, improve posture and flexibility.
What conditions/injuries does this treat?
Lower back pain/ lumbo-pelvic instability , pelvic floor dysfunction, shoulder pain/weakness/dysfunction to name a few. Pilates can be used for just about any condition, as long as the appropriate exercises are given. There are certain exercises that would be avoided for certain conditions. However, the provider should be aware of your injury/diagnosis in order to make appropriate modifications.
What kind of education or training is required for therapists?
There are several different Pilates programs, however in order to become certified, you must complete all of the required coursework in addition to completion of observation, teaching and practicing hours totaling over 500 hours. However, some people will just take courses in matwork or on specific pieces of equipment that are most commonly used and they are able to instruct and educate patients in those areas.
