Dr. Peter Daly Honored By University Of Notre Dame With Outstanding Service Award

Dr. Peter Daly has been recognized with the Dr. Thomas A. Dooley Award by his alma mater, the University of Notre Dame, for his volunteer medical service in Honduras. The Dooley Award was established in 1984, and is conferred each year on an alum who has exhibited outstanding service to humankind. We at Summit applaud Dr. Daly’s global commitment to addressing disparities in medical and surgical care for the poor.

In 2003, Dr. Daly’s friendship with a young Honduran medical student introduced him to the plight of Honduran orphans. This experience inspired Dr. Daly and his wife, LuLu, with the support of Summit Orthopedics, to build, equip, and staff the Holy Family Surgery Center on the grounds of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, an orphanage in the mountainous region near Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The Holy Family Surgery Center has been serving the poor of Honduras since 2008. To date, through the volunteer efforts of Dr. Daly and his Summit colleagues, the surgery center has provided more than 13,000 consultations, 1,800 surgeries, and continuing educational lectures to support better health for Hondurans.

Dolly Duffy, executive director of the Notre Dame Alumni Association and associate vice president of the University explained that serving those most in need has always been central to Notre Dame’s mission and character. “The Dooley Award is reserved for our graduates who have gone above and beyond in answering this call,” she said. “Dr. Daly’s selfless efforts on behalf of those who desperately need surgical care in Honduras certainly places him in this group, and we are honored to be able to recognize him for his inspiring work.”

“Summit’s surgery center staff, our business office, our therapists, and many of my orthopedic surgical partners have all contributed to this work,” said Dr. Daly. “I humbly accept this honor on behalf of my Summit Orthopedics family and the poor we serve.”
