About
Dr. McManus Approach to Care
Dr. McManus subscribes to the philosophy of treating his patients as if they were family. “I like to get to know patients – that’s the fun part of the job, getting to know people,”
For Summit sports medicine surgeon Tim McManus, MD, the road to his career was paved with a combination of personal experiences and natural aptitude. A football player growing up, he got an up-close look at the life of a sports medicine physician when he broke his leg. As he went through rehabilitation, he shadowed his doctor. “It seemed like a dynamic lifestyle and aligned with my main vocation of helping people. The anatomy of the human body and the injuries that can befall athletes was fascinating,” he said.
Dr. McManus also went to Honduras as part of One World Surgery’s mission. “That gave me intimate exposure to the life-changing power of medicine,” Dr. McManus said.
Dr. McManus’s background
After earning an undergraduate degree in history from Dartmouth College, Dr. McManus completed pre-medical postbaccalaureate studies at Harvard University Extension School. He earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed residency training in orthopedic surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. He pursued specialized fellowship training in sports medicine at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver before joining Summit Orthopedics.
He chose to focus on orthopedics because he enjoys being able to fix problems and help people get better. He focuses on sports medicine procedures, including arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip, and knee. During his fellowship, Dr. McManus was a team physician for the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos, as well as a local high school football team.
Dr. McManus’s practice philosophy
Dr. McManus subscribes to the philosophy of treating his patients as if they were family. “I like to get to know patients – that’s the fun part of the job, getting to know people,” he said.
Sports medicine, for Dr. McManus, is a team game. “I approach each patient interaction with the goal of being a good teammate by educating them about their diagnosis and presenting options,” he said. “The patient is the most important member of the team, and it’s my job to build trust with the patient.”
A foundation of trust helps patients achieve the best outcomes. “There are typically lots of different ways to fix a problem, including different nonsurgical modalities, physical therapy, and injections. If we get to a point where the patient needs surgery, then we know we’ve tried all the other ways first,” he said.
