About

Complex Shoulder Surgery and Upper Extremity Expertise

I’m an upper extremity orthopedic surgeon with particular expertise in complex shoulder surgery. I perform all forms of shoulder surgery, including reverse total shoulders, anatomic total shoulders, rotator cuff surgery, and labral repairs for shoulder dislocations, as well as revision total shoulder surgery. I am also skilled in addressing traumatic shoulder fractures, such as proximal humerus injuries, and elbow fracture-dislocations from things like falls or vehicle accidents.

Why Dr. Delaney Chose to Focus on Shoulder and Upper Extremity

I love being a complex shoulder specialist because of the variety of conditions and procedures we see and do. We can perform fixation of traumatic fractures, repairs of torn rotator cuff tendons, also shoulder replacement for chronic wear and tear. I provide orthopedic care for the entire arm, a specialty that requires the surgeon to be adept in joint, tendon, nerve, vascular, and fracture repair.

The shoulder is my favorite joint in the body. Its anatomy is incredible: its range of motion is unmatched, and the joint relies on soft tissues to a greater degree than any other joint. You have to be very precise when you’re working with the shoulder, because it has so many fine-tuned elements. That requirement aligns well with my detail-oriented mindset.

Dr. Delaney’s Patient Care Approach

Everyone has activities in their lives that bring them joy and satisfaction. When I talk with patients, I want to know what they love to do, and how their shoulder, hand, or wrist problem is preventing them from enjoying their lives. I want to help them get back to those activities they love, so they can live fulfilling lives.

Another key feature of my approach is to set expectations with patients by having an honest and realistic discussion about each of their treatment options. Sometimes nonoperative management is a better option, and in other cases, surgery is a better option. And I try to paint a clear picture about what each of those options could do for them. I try to give patients accurate expectations, so they can base their decision on appropriate information.

Dr. J.P. Delaney’s Outside Interests

I grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, and I am proud to be spending my career and raising a family here in the Twin Cities. Like many people who live here, I love to stay active by getting outside and doing things with my family. I grew up playing hockey, which I continue to do weekly. I started running when we got a dog, and in the last couple of years, I have started training for and running ultramarathons. My surgical training took me all over the country, but Minnesota is where I want to be and where I plan to be for a long time to come.
