About
Hip and Knee Arthritis Surgery
My practice focuses on performing hip and knee replacement on people who have arthritic hips and knees. I specialize in those surgeries — both first-time hips and knees as well as revision surgeries. This specialized approach separates the providers at Summit from those at other practices. Hip and knee replacement for arthritis is all I do, and it is all I have wanted to do since deciding to focus on orthopedics early in college.
What Led Dr. Matthew Nies to Focus on Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery
Adult joint reconstruction is a subset of orthopedics that I feel particularly connected to. During college, I worked as a nursing assistant at a local hospital, and my first assignment was on an orthopedic surgery floor, filled with patients recovering from total joint replacement surgery. It was a really positive experience for me, and it helped me focus my existing aspirations for a career in medicine into a goal to specialize in hip and knee replacement.
My fellowship work gave me the opportunity to get a lot more experience doing only total joint replacements for a whole year, including primary surgeries as well as revision surgeries for people who are having problems with a previous joint replacement or whose artificial joint is wearing out.
Working with Patients to Decide Whether It’s Time for Surgery
Deciding whether and when to have surgery is a big deal. I see myself as a guide or a coach, helping patients as they navigate that decision process. I talk with them about how bad their symptoms are and what treatment might be appropriate at this point. My advice is driven by symptoms and not what the X-rays look like. It’s important that patients make decisions about what fits best for them in their lives in terms of the treatment for their arthritic hip or knee.
I won’t try to convince anyone to have an injection or a joint replacement who doesn’t really want it. If you just want to come in and get an opinion about your options, I’m happy to do that. I try to follow the patient’s lead.
Dr. Matthew Nies’s Approach to Care
It’s important to me to make sure my team and I respond quickly when patients call with a question. We are here for you if questions or concerns come up, or if you need to be seen on an urgent basis. My physician assistants and I are committed to building relationships with our patients and to helping them through good times, and especially the bad times, with their joints.
The greatest compliment I can receive is when a patient refers a friend, neighbor, or family member to me for care. We’re a patient-centric care team, and our care approach is defined by our focus on the patient’s needs at every stage.
Outside the office, I’m a parent of two young children, which keeps me busy. I also travel to Guatemala once a year to perform knee replacements as part of a volunteer medical mission group I started working with during my fellowship.
