What is Craniosacral Therapy?
This is a manual therapy (hands-on) method that decreases tension of the skull (cranium) or soft tissue structures surrounding and protecting the spinal cord called the Dura mater. It extends down to the end of the low back area called the sacrum; hence this is how it got its name craniosacral therapy.
What are the benefits?
This is a very gentle technique that is based on restoring balance and motion that is necessary for the brain and spinal cord to function properly.
How is it performed?
This can be done using direct pressure or resistance which is essentially given force in the direction the tissues do not want to move in. An indirect technique is when tissues or structure is brought in a direction that is over-emphasized in the direction the tissue wants to move in or the direction of ease. These techniques are specific with hand placement and direction of force that needs to be given.
What conditions or injuries does it treat?
Headaches, chronic neck / low back pain, central nervous system disorders, orthopedic problems, concussions / traumatic brain injuries, and TMJ.
Who can perform Craniosacral Therapy?
This technique involves taking a series of classes and takes time to practice to be proficient in.
