What is Graston Technique?
Graston Technique® is a form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to detect and effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions, as well as maintain optimal range of motion.
Who is it beneficial for?
Graston Technique® is beneficial for a wide range of patients, including those with surgical and non-surgical orthopedic conditions. Any patient with soft tissue restrictions impacting their progress can benefit from this technique.
What are the benefits?
Graston Technique® allows a clinician to get as deep into the tissue to promote change. As the instruments are moved over the affected area, they help break up scar tissue and fascial restrictions. In time, this process can reduce or eliminate the adhered fibers, restoring range of motion and helping to eliminate the associated pain.
Does it hurt?
Graston Technique® does not need to be painful to be effective. Your clinician will work with you to determine what is appropriate for your given situation and will respect your pain tolerance.
How often does it have to be done?
How frequently Graston treatments are recommended can vary based on your individual presentation, goals, and your therapist’s assessment. Most typically this treatment is done 1-2x/week with a minimum of 48 hours in between sessions. It is utilized in conjunction with other forms of treatment such as therapeutic exercise.
Are there situations where Graston Technique shouldn’t be used?
The most common situation in which clinicians will avoid this treatment is if you are taking a prescription blood thinner due to increased risks of bruising.
