At Summit Orthopedics, we are always focused on giving our patients the best possible care. That’s part of the reason our doctors have been named among the Top Doctors by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine more than 150 times. This year, a record-high 11 Summit physicians have received the 2020 Top Doctor honor.
Mpls.St.Paul Magazine’s Top Doctors list recognizes the medical experts whom Minnesota’s physicians and registered nurses would trust the most to care for them or their family members. The 11 Summit physicians on this year’s list span three specialty areas: orthopedic surgery, physiatry, and sports medicine. Most of these physicians have made the list year after year.

2020 Top Doctors recognition in orthopedic surgery
Orthopedic surgical specialists focus on injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This system encompasses treatment for damaged bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Nine Summit physicians were named 2020 Top Doctors.
Dr. Kristoffer Breien
Dr. Breien’s specialties are hip, knee, joint preservation and restoration, complex knee revision, hip replacement, arthroscopic procedures, and fracture care. He focuses mainly on lower-extremity injuries and issues, and loves to engage patients, answer their questions, and help them get back to the activities they love. He has been on the Top Doctors list since 2007.
Dr. Peter Daly
Dr. Daly’s focus areas include knee, shoulder, hip, sports medicine/arthroscopic surgery, and joint preservation and restoration. Because shoulder arthritis has prompted him to adjust his own activities, he brings personal perspective as well as medical expertise to his patients who are dealing with the same kinds of issues. Dr. Daly has been a Top Doctor honoree since 1999.
Dr. Jack Drogt
Dr. Drogt’s specialties include knee, hip, joint preservation and restoration, arthroscopy, and knee and hip arthritis. His expertise lies in knee and hip reconstruction. Dr. Drogt is attentive to each patient’s goals and works with them to address their expectations and help them meet their individual objectives. He has been a Top Doctor since 1992.
Dr. Michael Forseth
Dr. Forseth’s specialties include hand, wrist, and elbow, complex reconstructive surgery of upper extremities, and microsurgery. He is an avid runner and cyclist. An active researcher, Dr. Forseth has had work published in multiple medical journals, including the Journal of Hand Surgery. He has been named a Top Doctor since 2015.
Dr. James Gannon
A Top Doctor since 1996, Dr. Gannon is a fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder arthroscopy, sports medicine, joint preservation, and replacement. He has practiced in St. Paul for more than 25 years. In some cases, he has cared for three generations of the families who have placed their trust in us.
Dr. Peter Parten
Dr. Parten is a fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in shoulder injuries and arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. His patients value him for his focused expertise and compassionate care. Dr. Parten understands that in our busy lives, there is never a good time to rest and recover from an injury. He focuses on helping his patients return to their lives safely and quickly. He has been honored as a Top Doctor since 2008.
Dr. Edward Santos
Dr. Santos’s surgical specialties encompass minimally invasive back, neck, and spine surgery and cervical disc replacement. Before joining the Summit spine team, Dr. Santos educated medical residents for more than a decade as an associate professor at the University of Minnesota. He believes that patients’ concerns and expectations deserve to be heard, and he is committed to providing the best care possible to all of his patients with spine disorders. He also made the Top Doctor list in 2019.
Dr. David Strothman
A back and spine expert, Dr. Strothman has specialties including cervical disc replacement and minimally invasive back, neck, and spine surgery for the treatment of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine disorders. He has an additional focus in treating people with adult scoliosis. Dr. Strothman is dedicated to explaining all the options available to his patients, both surgical and nonsurgical, so that they can make the best decision for their quality of life. He has been repeatedly recognized as a “Rising Star” by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. This is his first year on the Top Doctor list!
Dr. Andrew Derek Thomas
Dr. Thomas’s specialties include hand, wrist, elbow, carpal tunnel, and hand and wrist arthritis. He brings expertise from hand fellowships in Switzerland, Germany, and the Indiana Hand Center to his compassionate care of patients with hand diseases and injuries. He has been on the Top Doctor list since 2004.
2020 Top Doctors recognition in Physiatry
Physiatrists specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. In their practices, they evaluate and treat patients with physical impairments and disabilities. One physiatry specialist was named among Summit’s 2020 Top Doctors.
Dr. Erik Ekstrom
A Top Doctor since 2016, Dr. Ekstrom’s areas of expertise include physical medicine and rehabilitation, minimally invasive spine therapies, and sports-related injuries. The most gratifying part of his work is identifying and fixing patient problems, so they can return to the lifestyle they enjoy.
2020 Top Doctors recognition in Sports Medicine
Sports medicine physicians focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries and illnesses related to sports participation and exercise. One specialist was named among Summit’s 2020 Top Doctors in sports medicine.
Dr. Amy Beacom
Dr. Beacom is a specialist in sports medicine who has been on the Top Doctors list since 2008. She treats injuries of the shoulder, ankle, foot, and knee. Her dedication to treating orthopedic injuries related to running and swimming is reflected in her service as a team physician for USA Swimming. She takes great pleasure in helping her patients maintain and reclaim a healthy, active life.
